Literary Google Doodles, Revisited Way back in 2013, I pulled together a round-up of literary Google Doodles. Its been three years, and I thought it might be worth doing another round-up. This time, Ive included Doodles that those of us in the US, Canada, Australia, or the UK may not have seen. Going international with the Doodles means learning about the literary worlds of non-English speaking countries and seeing the variety of books and voices and stories out there. In addition to the Doodles themselves, Im including a link to the landing page for it, as well as any interesting facts Ive pulled up about the image or the literary luminary behind it. Tuck these factoids away for future trivia contests or Jeopardy because some of them are biggies. This isnt a comprehensive round-up, but its pretty close. Zora Neale Hurston, honored on January 1, 2014. Haim Nachman Bialik was honored for his 141th birthday on January 9, 2014. Bialik was a Jewish poet, known for writing in Hebrew and Yiddish. He was born in Ukraine, where the Doodle appeared. For her 106th birthday, Simone de Beauvoir was honored throughout the world on January 9, 2014. On February 10, 2014, Raicho Hiratsukas 128th birthday was honored in Japan. Hiratsuka was a writer, a poet, and an early feminist in her country. John Steinbecks 112th birthday was honored with this Doodle on February 27, 2014. Belgian  comic creator André Franquin was honored for his Gaston Lagaffe character on February 28, 2014. The Doodle ran through various countries in Europe. In the UK on March 6, 2014, Elizabeth Browning was honored for her 208th birthday. Ukrainian poet and folklorist Taras Shevchenko was honored in parts of Europe in a Doodle for his 200th birthday on March 9, 2014. For his 100th birthday, Octavio Paz was honored with a Google Doodle through parts of South America on March 31, 2014. Argentinian writer Victoria Ocampo, born in 1890, was honored with a Doodle in her home country for her 124th birthday in April 2014. In Greece on April 8, 2014, poet Dionisios Solomos was honored with a Doodle for his 216th birthday. Ivana Brlic Mazuranic was celebrated in April 2014 on her  140th birthday. She was a Croatian writer, most well known for her legacy in childrens writing  in the country. Charlotte Brontes 198th birthday was cause for a Google Doodle in April 2014. Whats interesting with this one is seeing where it was released sort of surprising not to see it in the US or in Canada. Japans Ichiyo Higuchi was a well-known short story writer. Her legacy was honored May 2, 2014, for her 142nd birthday. Julija BeniuÅ¡eviciute-Žymantiene was a Lithuanian writer. She was honored for her 169th birthday on June 4, 2014.  BeniuÅ¡eviciute-Žymantiene wrote most notably about peasantry. Romanian poet  Vasile Alecsandri was honored on his 193rd birthday with a Doodle in parts of Europe on July 21, 2014. Poet Salvador Novo was honored in Mexico in July 2014 on his 110th birthday. In France for his 215th birthday, French writer/novelist Comtesse de Ségur was honored with a Doodle of a scene from one of his most famous works,  Sophies Misfortunes. August 28, 2014, marked the 200th birthday of Sheridan Le Fanu, an Irish writer known best for his Gothic and mystery novels. Diana Wynne Jones was honored with a Google Doodle for her 80th birthday on August 16, 2014. Whats strange is this one was limited to the UK, Russia, and Indonesia it never saw the time in the US, Canada, or Australia. Latin American countries saw a Doodle that honored writer Julio Cortazars 100th birthday in August 2014. Cortazar was well-known throughout his country of Argentina. The 205th birthday of Polish dramatist Juliusz Slowacki was celebrated with a Doodle in September 2014. Only seen in Italy in September 2014 is this homage to Orlando Furioso, an epic poem written by Ludovico Ariosoto. It honored the writers 540th birthday. Celebrated with this Doodle throughout the entire world, September 4, 2014, marked the 186th birthday of Leo Tolstoy. Indian writer RK Narayan was honored in October 2014 on Indias Google landing page for his 108th birthday. Stella Maria Sarah Miles is an Australian author who was honored with an illustration from her book  My Brilliant Career in this Doodle from October 2014. It was in honor of her 135th birthday. November 7, 2014, marked the 113th birthday of Brazilian poet and writer Cecília Meireles. Polish writer, poet, and essayist Zofia Nalkowska was honored with a Doodle in Poland for her 130th birthday on November 10, 2014. The 136th birthday of Akiko Yosano was celebrated with this Doodle in Japan on December 7, 2014. Yosano was a writer and a leading feminist in the country. This doesnt celebrate a particular individual of note, but the Doodle for Indonesias Mothers Day is adorable and sweet and features a mother reading to her two children. Ukraines most well-known childrens author  Vsevolod Nestayko was honored with this Doodle through the country January 30, 2015 for his 85th birthday. How about this video Doodle celebrating Langston Hughess 113th birthday? Just click through and enjoy the video on this one. This one debuted February 1, 2015. This might have the coolest history to it for non-French readers or those who dont know comics history. On February 2, 2015, Google honored  Bécassine, believed to be the first female protagonist in comics history. The Doodle was in celebration of the 110th anniversary of the comics first publication. Laura Ingalls Wilders 148th birthday was cause for a Doodle in February 2015. This one was made through needle felting and the process behind it is as neat as the creation itself. February 13, 2015 marked the 246th birthday of Russian folklorist Ivan  Andreyevich Krylov. Spanish writer and poet Rosalia de Castro got her own Doodle on February 24, 2015, in honor of her 178th birthday. On February 26, 2015, Google Brazil honored José Mauro de Vasconcelos. The illustration showcases one of his most well-known works and was created for his 95th birthday. Anna Atkins is associated with being the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographs. She was honored with a Doodle in the US and the UK on March 16, 2015 for her 216th birthday. South Korean poet, novelist, and short story writer Hwang Sun-won was celebrated with this Doodle in his native country on March 26, 2015 for his 100th birthday. For her 126th birthday, Gabriela Mistral was honored with this Doodle throughout Latin America on April 7, 2015. Mistral was the first  and only  woman from Latin America to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. New Zealand crime writer Ngaio Marshs 122nd birthday was honored with this Doodle in New Zealand and Australia on April 23, 2015. It has a nice little animated component worth checking out on the Google Doodle site. This Doodle, seen throughout France, Canada, and a few other countries, honors the 45th anniversary of Barbapapa, which comes from a series of childrens books that are well-known in France. It was created and seen on May 19, 2015. As seen in Egypt and other countries throughout North Africa, the 92nd birthday of novelist and activist Latifa al-Zayyat was honored August 8, 2015. Ever heard of the Mundaneum? Chances are good that youve seen one if youve ever been in a library with a card catalog. On August 15, 2016, the 147th birthday of the Mundaneum founder,  Paul Otlet, was celebrated. Otlet was the creator the Universal Bibliography in Brussels. The whole history of this is completely fascinating. England, as well as a few other countries throughout the world, celebrated the 91st birthday of childrens author Joan Aiken on September 4, 2015. The commentary connected with this Doodle celebrating the 168th birthday of Indian writer and activist Annie Besant highlights how this sweet image of an older woman doesnt capture the ferocity of her writing and work to Indian history. For both Grandmothers Day and Grandfathers Day in Poland in January 2016, there was this adorable family of cats sharing a book together. Grandpa cats hat is a real showstopper. And of course, its fitting to end this round-up with the Doodle seen the world-round: William Shakespeares 400th birth/death anniversary on April 23, 2016. Have a favorite Doodle? My Observations At Rose Rock School Commenced - 993 Words

My observations at Rose Rock School commenced at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, I climbed the steps to get the doors and knocked on the door and only then noticed a small sign that said for people to use the back door. The front door was then opened by a woman that asked if I was Megan, I said yes. When I walked in I noticed that the rooms had no doors and the first room had most likely been a living room and the room next to it a dining room. The lady that had let me in said she would get Shanah and let her know I was here. I met Shanah and she explained that I would be observing in the room that is next to the living room and that parents start dropping off their children at eight in the morning. While we talked, I asked Shanah how many children are in her group and she said thirteen children, which included her own son that is one and a half years old. As we talked, the children started arriving and she got them to sit down at the table and told them that they were going to make art craft for their mother for mother’s day. While Shanah was cutting the cloth, another caregiver came into the room and I asked her what the ages the children in this group was and she replied that the children in this group were between 1  ½ and 6 years old. After this caregiver left, I noticed one of the older children asked who I was and she responded that I was watching their class to learn. In this particular theory of management, the organizational leader believes on the value of maximising the output. As identified by Hill, Jones and Schilling (2014), this particular management theory advocates that the best way of motivating the employees is to provide them money. However, not every personality pattern of employees seeks for money from his or her organization. As mentioned earlier, the employees who have the priority of instrumental work value will be satisfied to work under such a management procedure. In such a context, an employee who is seeking a job satisfa ction and wants to indentify his role in the society with his organizational role, person-organization fit can never be achieved. On the other hand, an employee who has the priority of satisfying his or her cognitive work value can never be able to relate himself with the value of the profit making or the maximisation of the output of the organization. As mentioned by Chen, Sparrow and Cooper (2016), the failure in identifying the employees need and its satisfaction decreases the production and motivation of the employees, which in turn creates decreased level of customer service. Thus, the absence of Person-organization fit may lead a company to experience market failure. In such a context, an employee with less creative or innovative stance and less preference of change will feel less competent and confused. Moreover, as mentioned by Barrick, Mount and Li (2013), not every employee likes to join i n the decision making process. With a personality of a follower, an employee may seek satisfaction in following the rules. In such a context, being an employee under the participative management will create dissatisfaction for that employee. The employees who need systematic leadership, documented job role, clear code of conduct or a structured and formal relation within the workplace can feel satisfied and contented with the organizational behavioural pattern of the bureaucratic management. On the other hand, the companies which follow a job production process or customised production procedure or a touch of creativity within the production, need to hire employees of different kind. Hence, they employees f such organization crave for the cognitive work value and the affective work value. They need an organization which calls for participative decision making procedure, a flexible job role and work pattern, open working environment, lack of strict codes, coordinating relationship among co-workers, value for their contribution to the organization and a sense of self-satisfaction and actualization. Hence, it is important for them to join an organization that follows a participative management under the human relation or behavioural management. The employees and the organizations need to choose each other as per their value base and the model of decision making. As mentioned by Piazza and Castellucci (2014), the person-organization fit helps the organization in providing satisfaction to its employees which is crucial for the attainment of the desired level of productivity, commitment and improved customer service. Self reflection: As per the personality test model developed by Myers and Briggs, I can identify myself with the INFP personality. According to this test model, I am Introvert, Intuitive, Feeling and of Perceiving nature. As mentioned by Cohen, Ornoy and Keren (2013), in this said model an INFP model personality is inclined to creative and humanistic occupation and culture. According to this framework, I am a reserved and introspective personality, who loves to analyse a situation and make intuitive decisions. I love innovation and open to change in the personal and professional life. However, I am an empathetic personality, who makes decisions based on its impact upon people. Moreover, as mentioned by Kun, Kiss and Kapitny (2015), the INFP personality is largely guided by his/her personal values and believe on justice. On the other hand, Aranda and Tilton (2013), have described the INFP personality as one who believes taking risk for growth and focuses on starting a project, curious, open minded and do not hesitate to change. As mentioned by Huang et al. (2014), as an INFP personality I prefer a workplace which promotes effective interpersonal relationship and an open workplace that provides me the opportunity to work on my own terms. Strict code of conduct, formal organizational culture and the rule of managerial laws are likely to make me frustrated and decrease my productivity. Hence, as an employee I need an organization that follows the human relations movement theory developed by George Elton Mayo. As mentioned by Barrick, Mount and Li (2013), the concentration on the psychological factors like job satisfaction of this management pattern is a prerequisite for me to be professionally successful and providing my best potential to the company. The company holding the values advocated by the human relations management theory will be the best fit for the INFP personality of me. As discussed by Cohen, Ornoy and Keren (2013), the participative decision-making behaviour of such an organization will provide me the option of using my creativity or my own way of performing the task which I fundamentally need for providing my best output. As per the Y theory of the Behavioural theory of Douglas McGregor, the employees love to work in an organization that serves their personal aim in life (Barrick, Mount Li, 2013). This particular management theory supports imaginat ion, creativity and ingenuity as the way of solving the issues related to the Human resources of an organization. Hence, I need an organization that follows this particular management process. As an employee I personally seek for the cognitive and affective work value. Hence an organization that believes in exercising participatory decision making and promotes transformational leadership will be the person-organization fit for me. As mentioned by Kun, Kiss and Kapitny (2015), an organization that promotes diversity, informal working condition, encourage innovation and creates a sense of value within the workers serve best the psychological needs of the INFP personality. Conclusion: In conclusion it can be said that attainment of the person-organization fit is crucial for obtaining organizational as well as personal success of an employee. Being an employee who does not prefer to take risks or organizational challenges, a participatory organization that asks for innovation can create frustration. Compared to the first pick of the NBA draft, Deandre Ayton, she will be earning more than $6 million less. This shows a huge gap in pay between the WNBA and NBA, and it is a huge deal. In the article, Yes, the WNBA Wage Gap Is a Real Thing, Al Neal discusses some of the main reasons critics use to make the argument against the wage gap. But first he gives some the brief history on a wage gap in general, according the U.S. Census Bureau women make 80% of what males do annually. There are hard evidence to show wage gaps in everything but a lot of people just ignore it. The first excuse he attacks is the NBA bringing in much more money than the WNBA so it just makes sense the male athletes get paid so much more. Well, in crunching the numbers Neal found that the WNBA makes at least $51.5 million in revenue, but the maximum salary is just over $100k for a veteran player. Excuse #2 is people not wanting to invest in a young, unstable league that doesn't draw a crowd. In 2017, the WNBA had it's highest league total and average attendances. It goes past attendance too, I have noticed that WNBA is playing more WNBA games than ever before. Excuse #3 is "We're losing money" - team owners. WNBA teams have generally not been very profitable, but so have some teams in other leagues. But the difference is that in other leagues, the owners are willing to invest much more money to make these teams more profitable. And the fourth and final excuse he discusses is the WNBA hasn't been around long enough. The NBA is now in their 23rd season, and they are at the peak of their powers so far. Neal has two suggestions for how the WNBA and it's players should handle their wage gap. Suggestion #1 is raise the player revenue sharing to 50% like the NBA, which seems very reasonable. His second suggestion is just waiting for the inevitable strike that WNBA players will go on. Now, I would always say WNBA players can't be paid more because of how much money the league brings in. I was not educated on these facts, and was unaware. I do believe WNBA players should be paid more, the league definitely makes enough money to raise the maximum salary from $100,000. In doing so, the WNBA will protect their investment in players much better. As of now, many WNBA players go and play overseas because the wage is much higher over there. In the past and recently, I have seen many WNBA players talk about wanting equal pay as men's players. But that is just impossible, the excuses people make about "not enough revenue" or "not enough interest" are real in that interest. The NBA is a multi-billion dollar league and one of the fastest growing sports globally. The WNBA can't afford to pay players equally to the NBA but I do think they could be paid equally considering the percentage of salaries to the revenue brought in. If not, players must go on strike to try and get things to work out. The WNBA players plight of not receiving enough money is real, unfair, and shows the inequality of men and women sports in general.

Second, when we look back into the history we can see that NASA had had the problem of foam strikes before with the Challenger and even witnessing its accident the administrative non-action still occurred due to the external political forces and th e internal pressures of meeting the deadline within the organizational structure of NASA. And these were the major factors contributing to the development of the problem. The internal pressures of meeting a certain deadline is not something uncommon in the organizational behavior, however it is solely the responsibility of the management team to make sure that whatever the deadlines are, they are met without putting any staff members at risk. And this case was an excellent example of ignoring the upcoming technical problems and neglecting human lives. An alternative and very desirable solution to the problem could be fixing the breach in the Thermal Protection System on the leading edge of the left wing. The Year Of 1776 In American History History Essay The year of 1776 was an important year in American history. The Revolutionary War had just begun and the outcome was still uncertain. It was year that would decide Americas future and test the will of our American soldiers. Several key battles were to be fought in an 18 month time frame and some of the most key battles were fought during the year of 1776. The author David McCullough takes the reader back in time to the 18th century right after the Battle of Lexington and Concord and the Battle of Bunker Hill. These battles marked the beginning of the Revolutionary War. He starts the book off with the Siege of Boston and continues through to the Battles of New York, Princeton and Trenton. David McCulloughs vivid knack for story telling captures the ups and downs that the Continental Army would face during the year of 1776. The Revolutionary War, (1775-1783), also called the War of Independence was between Great Britain and the thirteen British colonies. The King of Great Britain was George III, he was very popular during his reign, but he lost the loyalty of the American colonist who felt that being taxed without representation in Parliament violated their rights. Congress appointed George Washington as Major General and Commander-in-chief to lead, the soon to be independent states, against the super power Great Britain. The lives of both these men are fairly portrayed in this book. King George and Parliament have had enough of the traitors turned rabble in arms. (McCullough 20) George Washington, is portrayed as a human man, who has doubts and is always wondering what the future holds for them around the corner. The Siege of Boston was the opening phase of the American Revolutionary War in which the New England militiamen, who later became a part of the Continental Army, surrounded the town of Boston, Massachusetts to prevent movement by the British Army garrisoned within. The first battle for Boston began at Lexington and Concord, where the New England militia surrounded Boston. The British successfully seized Bunker Hill but they suffered many casualties despite fighting an army half their size. The end of the siege came when George Washington decided to seize the high ground at Dorchester Heights, overlooking Boston. Since it was the middle of winter, they were unable to dig in and they had to use logs branches and anything else available to fortify their position. The British cannons were out of range and their barrage of cannon fire could not reach the Americans at such a height. They planned an assault on the heights but due to a terrible storm they decided to withdraw peacefully as long as they were allowed to leave undisturbed. While the British were leaving, they thought they saw some movement and opened up a massive hail of cannon fire that lasted all night. It only killed four men but they were again out maneuvered by General Washington and his rabble in arms.(McCullough 20) McCullough does an excellent job portraying the differences in the Continental Army compared to the British. The Continental Army was made up of mostly volunteers. Often they were short of gun powder and clothing. They were unskilled in combat but they did have a few advantages. A major advantage was they fought on their own soil and knew the terrain well. They may have lost some battles, but they took the lives of many British soldiers who could not easily obtain reinforcements. For the British, it was discouraging to win battle after battle to realize how many men and supplies it cost them in the process. Surely to conceive that you were far superior in the art of war but couldnt bring the Continental army to their knees had to have severe psychological effects. The British troops eventually turned their focus to capturing New York City. The King hired Hessian troops to assist with defending New York. The British would drive back the American troops to the Brooklyn Heights. Washington had to withdraw his entire remaining army and all of their supplies across the East River in one night without the British noticing. This led to Washingtons decision to attack the Hessians on Christmas night by way of crossing the frozen Delaware River. They captured almost 900 Hessians at the Battle of Trenton. McCullough states With the victory at Trenton came the realization that the Americans had bested the enemy, bested the fearsome Hessians, the Kings detested hirelings, outsmarted them and outfought them, and so might well again. (McCullough 290) Cornwallis marched to retake Trenton but was outmaneuvered by Washington, who successfully defeated the British at Princeton. In my opinion this book is a must read for anyone interested in early American history. McCullough has a keen way of bringing readers back to the fateful year of 1776. He has a great eye for detail and has a knack for bringing the story to life. He was fare to the English and George III and was able to show why the English felt the American colonist rebellion was illegal but, an insult to them as well. I also like how he showed the human side of George Washington as indecisive and apt to makes some key errors at times. He also shows it was the determination of the Continental Army that made all of the difference in winning the war. Without these men our country would most likely still be under British rule. Every American should read this book it would help a vast amount of people to gain some appreciation of the founding of our country and the sacrifice of all of those who made this the great nation what it is today.

Then the size of the vein or deposit is determined, and mining engineers decide the best way to mine it. Most of the world’s yearly mineral production is extracted by surface mining, which includes open-pit mining, strip mining, and quarrying. Her involvement in MACEC had developed her to become a tough advocate of human rights and a safe and peaceful community. Like most members of MACEC, Naty has her own share of struggles with the impact of mining in their town. In 1993, the Maguila-guila Siltation Dam of Marcopper Mining Corporation collapsed and caused a flash flood that gushed to the Mogpog River. The heavy surge of water and mine spill had shaken their house and almost drowned them to death. Naty and her husband tied themselves with their eight children, so that they can support each other and avoid drowning. That traumatic experience drove her to be involved in the campaign against mining in their community and the entire province. She actively participated in many seminars, trainings, and mobilizations in and out of the province which are usually sponsored by MACEC. With support from MACEC and other organization, she took the lead in filing the case against Marcopper Mining Corporation. In 2005, she attended a Mining Conference in Baguio City organized by Legal Rights and Natural Resources Center. In the conference, she shared her experience during the 1993 flash flood and her contributions to the anti-mining actions. The participants felt her struggle; almost all of them cried after realizing that they were not alone in the fight for justice. That experience made her an even stronger advocate. Her integrity was challenged by the attempts of mining company to buy off her stand and discontinue. But she never thought of withdrawing the case even though sometimes it frustrates her to think that it is moving slow. But they cherish victories and milestones in their campaign—the 50-year mining moratorium in the province is one. To Naty, mining is a destructive industry that causes people to live in fear and exposes them to so much threat. For her, mining has no place now in Mogpog and in the entire province of Marinduque. Mining poses tremendous risks to life and limb, not only to miners but to the community as well. Countless accidents have happened and have affected thousands of miners in our country, directly or indirectly caused by hazardous mining operations. There is a very high social cost of mining and the impact on the society is immeasurable. Occupational health hazards posed by mining to workers are exposure to intense heat, poor ventilation, vibration, dust, fumes, repetitive stress injury (RSI), intense noise, manual handling (e.g. lifting) of heavy machinery and biological and chemical hazards. Due to the nature of underground mining, miners are constantly exposed to intense heat while hydration is very limited. Miners usually have fluid and salt deficiency due to constant sweating, increased stress on the heart, heat stroke, opacity of the lens and reduced fertility due to high heat. Poor ventilation robs the body of needed oxygen causing the brain to malfunction and leads to many deaths especially in underground operations. Vibration on the other hand can cause permanent damage to bones and vibration syndrome or â€Å"dead finger† syndrome can lead to gangrene in the hands and fingers. It can also cause digestive problems due to constant shaking of the internal organs, heart problems and disruption of the nervous system. Mines exposes workers to different types of airborne particulates, making them vulnerable to systemic toxic effects due to the absorption of lead, manganese, cadmium, zinc and other toxic material. Fumes are emitted by chemicals being used or by the machines being employed during mining operations. Coupled with poor ventilation, this can trigger accidents and cause death to workers. RSI being a soft-tissue disorder is caused by overloading of particular muscle group from repetitive use or maintenance of constrained postures. Miners who suffer from RSI complain of weakness of the affected muscles, heaviness, â€Å"pins and needles† sensation and numbness. Noise or irritating and hazardous sound can cause hearing impairment and/or disrupt body functions like blood circulation and hormone imbalance. Deafness and hearing loss can become irreversible and other non-auditory effects are increased blood pressure and peptic ulcer due to increased gastrointestinal motility. Manual lifting of materials causes back troubles leading to acute pain. A large percentage of the workers suffer sooner or later from this disorder caused by their type of work. Because most mines in the Philippines extract gold, the use of sodium cyanide for leaching gold from finely ground ore is frequent. The use of liquid mercury to create gold-amalgam is also wide-spread. Cyanide blocks the transfer of oxygen from the blood to the body tissues. Signs of acute poisoning include rapid breathing, gasping, tremors, convulsions and death. Effects of sub lethal poisoning include headache, dizziness and thyroid enlargement. A Fact-Finding Team composed of human rights and environmental experts from the United Kingdom which looked into the impact of mining on the environment and peoples’ livelihoods in the Philippines highlighted the occurrence of mining-related human rights abuses affecting local communities especially indigenous people; extrajudicial killings of persons protesting against mining; corruption in the mining sector; political pressure on the judiciary resulting in pro-mining decisions; and environmental impacts. The team observed that the record of mining companies with regard to environmental protection, disasters and post-mining clean-up in the Philippines is widely acknowledged, even with the government, to be very poor. As of 2003, there had been at least 16 serious tailing dam failures in the preceding 20 years and about 800 abandoned mine sites have not been cleaned up. Clean-up costs are estimated in billions of dollars and damage will never be fully reversed. It warned that water contamination from mining poses one of the top three ecological security threats in the world. Many mining applications in the Philippines are in water catchment areas close to the sea, and pose major threat to valuable marine resources. The severe pollution of the Taft river system in Eastern Samar as a result of the mining activities in Bagacay is a vivid example. The report also emphasized the very high geo-hazard risks in the Philippines. In the Philippines, over half of the active mining concessions and two-thirds of exploratory concessions are located in areas of high seismic risk where earthquakes are likely. The Philippines is considered as the hottest hotspot in the world in terms of threats to its mega diverse biodiversity. Thus there is an urgent need to properly manage its natural resources. It is estimated that 37% of Philippine forests may be exposed to new mining. We have to be concern with the past experiences where human rights were disregarded in pursuit of the mining operations. Likewise, our country is facing with the diminishing and restricted natural resources. Our government may be in need of revenue, but sacrificing the environmental management, such as the agricultural land, water and forests, which are more essential, sustainable and economically practicable. The exploration, development and utilization of mineral resources contend with the present day realities of global warming, pollution, and food shortages. One thing to consider is the dangers posed by earthquakes, typhoons and volcanic eruptions. Protecting the environment is avoiding risk and disaster; hence the acts of provincial board members are laudable. The bill in Congress banning all mining exploration and operation in Carigara Bay shows how Leyte 2nd district Representative (Rep.) Sergio Apostol, principal authored, with Leyte 3rd district Rep. Andres Salvacion and Biliran lone district Rep. Rogelio Espina, co-authors, seriously are concerned with the lives of the people and to protect the environment. Sangguniang Panlalawigan action on mining ventures in the province show they are not sleeping on their jobs. Their concern on the effect of mining is a great service to humanity, especially for Leyteà ±os. A negative impact on the environment, not only during its operations, but will continue even after long years of its cessation. Thus, the vital action of the government either from the national or local authorities imposing regulations to moderate the negative effect of mining in a locality is necessary. Our country has extremely poor mining reputation compared from other parts of the world. Abandoned mines and even those still operating have affected the livelihoods of thousands of lesser fortunate Filipinos. Mining has a negative effect for Filipino source of livelihood. In the case of the farmers in MacArthur wherein Leyte 2nd district Board Member Anlie Apostol is alarmed, because the Nicua Mining Corporation’s mining award may be against the spirit of the Agrarian Reform Law. Some 40 hectares were bought with option for the farmers to buy back the land may have violated the provision that the farmer-beneficiary could not sell the land within 25 years. Unless the land is no longer productive and approved by the Department of Agrarian Reform in accordance with the rules in conversion or exemption. At present we have some 800 abandoned mines in the country that have caused immense environmental damage. Some of which have records of human rights abuses. Abandoned mines have left the affected residents to undergo economic difficulties. How long will Nicua operates the mining? It is worthy to note that some mining companies have failed to comply with national law and international standards, according to Clare Short, a member of parliament from Birmingham, United Kingdom. As the stand taken by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) when they publicly opposed the 1995 Mining Act. Leyte 1st district Board Member Roque Tiu is correct in his contention that the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), and the Provincial Government of Leyte are not in contradiction over the Mining Act and the Local Government Code (LGC). It is true that licenses for mining operation is issued by the national government, however, the LGC provides: â€Å"Section 27. – Prior Consultations Required. – No project or program shall be implemented by government authorities unless the consultations mentioned in Section 2 (c) and 26 hereof are complied with, and prior approval of the Sanggunian concerned is obtained. Provided that occupants in areas where such projects are to be implemented shall not be evicted unless appropriate relocation sites have been provided, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. â€Å"Section 26. Duty of National Government Agencies in the Maintenance of /Ecological Balance.- It shall be the duty of every national agency or government-owned or controlled corporation authorizing of involved in the planning and implementation of any project or program that may cause pollution, climatic change, depletion of non-renewable resources, loss of cropland, rangeland, or forest cover, and extinction of animal or plant species, to consult with the local government units, nongovernmental organizations, and other sectors concerned and explain the goals and objectives of the project or program, its impact upon the people and the community in terms of environmental or ecological balance, and the measures that will be undertaken to prevent or minimize the adverse effects thereof.† In one of the rulings of the Supreme Court, it states: â€Å"Congress introduced Sections 26 and 27 in the Local Government Code to emphasize the legislative concern â€Å"for the maintenance of a sound ecology and clean environment.† These provisions require every national government agency or government-owned and controlled corporation to hold prior consultations with the local government unit concerned and to secure the prior approval of its sanggunian before implementing â€Å"any project or program that may cause pollution, climatic change, depletion of non-renewable resources, loss of cropland, rangeland, or forest cover and extinction of animal or plant species.†

Crime in the 21st Century: Technology and Terrorism Essay

It is an accepted fact that globalization has been a dominant development of the 21st century. Together with globalization, the major crimes in the 21st century became also global in scope and nature. The website policy-traccc. gmu. edu/ (2008) cited Louise I. Shelley, Director of George Mason University School of Public Policy as saying that â€Å"Terrorists and transnational crime groups will proliferate because these crime groups are major beneficiaries of globalization. They take advantage of increased travel, trade, rapid money movements† (1st para. ). Based from the statement, the major crimes in the 21st century in the likes of Sept. 11, 2001 of World Trade Center and the subsequent activities of Al Queda were considered as terrorist-related crimes. Terrorism which is domestic in nature was defined by www. tfft. co. uk (2008) through Boaz Ganor, an expert in the same field as â€Å"the intentional use of, or threat to use violence against civilians or against civilian targets, in order to attain political aims. †(1st para. ). Based on the definition, the target victims of domestic terrorism were the local population of a particular community or communities within a country. Kofi Annan, the UN Secretary General define international terrorism as â€Å"any action intended to kill or seriously harm civilians or non-combatants, with the purpose of intimidating a population or compelling action by a government or international organization† (â€Å"Discussion of definitions and the possibility of amalgamation†, 4th par. ). In both definitions, the use of violence, the target are individuals or a country or an international organization and the purpose is to attain political objectives were the salient points. Related to use of violence against individuals or an international organization, experience in 9/11 bombing will tell us that the impact of terrorist act is much intense when it was done in a surprise manner. In this age of great technological advancement, it is imperative for a government to use technology to pre- empt terrorist acts which usually result to great destruction of lives and properties. In order to promote development of anti-terrorism technology, the US Congress after the 9/11 has acted decisively and passed the Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act. This act provides protection to sellers, manufacturers, distributors and providers of hi-tech anti-terrorism gadgets and instruments. As a result, about 200 different companies were awarded the SAFETY Act certification. (Cafarano, 2008). This paper aims to document the availability of the latest high technology instruments, what is the principle behind such instrument and elucidate how the government is using the gadgets to 2 pre-empt surprise terrorist attacks. It was mentioned by Louise I. Shelley, Director of George Mason University School of Public Policy that terrorists usually use the benefits of globalization related to increased travel, trade and rapid money movements. This was the reason why terrorists were always associated with urban centers, buses, airplanes, airports and places where people usually congregate. The following are the popular ant- terrorism gadgets so far invented: The Anti Human-Bomb Bus In Israel and Iraq, the suicide bomber is one of the most deadly threats to innocent citizens. Numerous prevention techniques have been developed to address this problematic threat. According to Holmes, et al (2005), in Israel bus system, a new technology aimed at preventing suicide bombers from boarding a bus was invented and being used at present. This is achieved by detecting explosives from approaching passengers. Developed by Israeli Military Industries, the system takes the form of turnstile fitted with shield sensors. The sensors can detect explosives at a distance of up to a meter from the bus. When the sensor detect a suspicious passenger, the turnstile remains blocked and a red warning light flashes near the bus driver. A green light flashes when a boarding passenger is not a threat. Another turnstile at the rear of the bus allows passenger to get off the rear but not board it in cases of emergencies. The bus windows were bullet and shrapnel – proof and a communication system can allow the driver to talk to waiting passengers outside and call for help in emergencies. A bus with these features costs $25,000. 00. Rapiscan Airport Scanner This technology was developed as an answer to the improvements needed with neutron and ion detector technology (Panel on Assessment of the Practicality of Pulsed Fast Neutron Transmission Spectroscopy for Aviation Security, 2008) According to the Panel, the drawback of the two technology instruments earlier developed is that it cannot detect explosives and other materials if hidden under lead cover and plastic materials. According to Holmes, et al , the instrument was called Rapiscan Secure 1000 and function by scanning the passenger like a virtual strip search. The machine uses a low-level reflective x-ray technology to scan a person’s body through their clothing thus showing clearly metal objects like guns and explosives wrapped in plastics. Civil liberties advocates were opposed in using it due to the virtual strip effect. The technology has been considered for compulsory use in airports. The potential of people being embarrassed due to virtual strip effect of the scanner can be avoided by separating the male from female. The eXaminer This is an advanced form of Explosive Detection System (EDS) and is currency being used in the Middle East although the technology is still being perfected in the US according to Holmes,et al. The instrument is called the Examiner 3DX600 and being used to detect explosives in baggage and not from people. This instrument uses advanced Computer Tomography that result to complete 3D image reconstruction of entire bags and analyzes any potential hazards from the baggage without the need for opening it. This reduces the likelihood of exposure of staff to hazardous stuff inside the baggage. . This EDS can completely and continuously scan over 500 bags an hour. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology and Biometrics This new system is called US-VISIT. It scans photographs of the visitor’s face and index finger into a computer and matched with the criminal data base of the federal agencies. According to infowars. com (2005), the RFID technology practically is an invisible automatic ID check by the government and has long been needed in clogged border system of most countries particularly the US. With RIFD technology, people or objects are identified automatically and swiftly. The technology allow vehicles outfitted with the technology to pass through toll plazas without stopping but will be stopped in borders if their identifying data produce red flags; if otherwise, they will just be stopped for a brief check without lengthy questioning. The website declared that â€Å"U. S. officials want to see if the same technology that speeds cars through highway tolls and identifies lost pets can unclog border crossings without compromising security†. As part of the biometric data base, foreign visitors at the 50 busiest land border crossings in 10 states of the US are now being fingerprinted. The chips with identifying information will be placed in a document such as the State Department issued border crossing cards for those making regular short trips across the Mexican border. The chips can also be attached to an antenna that transmit data to a handheld or stationary reader which then converts the radio waves from the RFID tag into a code that links to identifying biometric information in a computer database of border agents. The use of biometrics which involve the physiological and behavioral characteristics for identification purposes has been initiated by the US to enhance security and identification (Batch, et al, 2006). There 4 were considerations however related to its wide scale collection like its practicality and social impact which infringe on self’s autonomy. To address the concerns, the NRC and the CIA were undertaking comprehensive assessments on current biometric capabilities and future possibilities. Summary and Conclusion It was documented that 21st century crimes were mostly international terrorism in nature and can be linked to advances in technology and globalization especially with the ease of international travel and readily available financing through electronic money transfers. Since terrorists were using the technological advances in doing their crimes to achieve their political aims, the countries were also doing its best to encourage companies and individuals to develop technologically advanced gadgets to pre-empt surprise attacks which were the very common style of terrorist activities. In the US, a total of over 200 companies were registered and given the incentive of being free from legal suit and damages for them to continue their business of inventing instruments aimed at pre-empting terrorism. Only a few newly invented gadgets were available in literature. A number of them being done by the 200 companies according to unwritten sources were highly confidential in nature and therefore no literature yet are available. This was being done by the US Defense Department so that the terrorist themselves will be surprised that their planned acts of terrorism has been long monitored and therefore will think twice before implementing their plan. Surprise attack and defense has been the name of the game against terrorists. The new gadgets documented in this paper were living proof that government is not winking their eyes even for a moment and always several steps ahead of terrorist plans. The government was aware that terrorism cannot be stopped and can only be prevented from happening for the time being but the plan and danger will always be there as experienced in 9/11 bombing. Terrorism is man- made and the inspiration which fuel terrorist acts is a product of an insane mind. This cowardice act can only survive in a society which is ill- prepared and whose ideals were blurred by the blinding light of success and achievements. After the 9/11 incident, we can no longer judge the readiness of one country towards terrorism. The technological advances made it possible to hide all the preparations and readiness in the pretext that everything is topsy-turvy and no one dares to make the first move. This makes the children believe that their primary caretaker (parent) will always be available for them to meet their needs.
